Hard Drive Recover - Hardware Problems

Where can I find information on how data retrieval companies retrieve data? I know about getting an identical hard-drive and such, but how do you do it when that is not an option? Any pointers? I have been searching the net for almost 2 weeks now, and cant find ANYTHING useful.

yes, I already use GetDataBack, what I need is the hardware (and/or) training to do what the data retrieval companies do when your hard-drive is totally dead.
