Need a million dollar server? .... IBM may have what you're looking for

Ok, I lied... the price for its new pSeries 690 server is $761,878. Keep in mind, that is only a mid-range configuration. So you must be wondering what do you get for all that money.

For starters, you get a server that runs a POWER4 processor at 1.1Ghz to 1.3Ghz. Oh come on now, stop laughing and read on. This is actually some awsome engineering. Each POWER4 processor really contains 2 64bit CPU's along with a triple-level cache: 4 internal L1 caches, a shared internal L2 cache, and a shared external L3 cache. This process of linking to processors together is known as CMP, but having them on the same chip makes it much faster and more effecient that using the main board as a connection.

So your AMD Athlon packs a wapping 37.5 million transisters and Intel's P4 packs 42 million transisters .... how about 170 million transisters for the POWER4.

Ok, now that we understand what the POWER4 processor is, lets move on to the real deal. IBM takes 4 of those POWER4 processors and packs them all onto a single chip. So for you math majors, thats 8 processors and 680 million transisters on a single die (chip).

Need more? A p690 server can have 32 of these chips running together which of course packs more than 2.7 billion transisters into a single box. Then, you can link multiple pSERIES servers together into a 'supercomputer' with more than 1,000 of these CPU's working together.

Now, the downside. A mid-range 16-way p690 server will take a kilowatt of power to run, about as much as an average home. The POWER4 processor has a total of 5,500 pins and requires an insersion force of 700 pounds to install.

Ain't technology grand?

A better option would be to take your savings and buy lots of lottery tickets and hope for the best.
