formating drive

I have run into an interesting problem. My C drive is a 8.4 gig fujitsu Model # MPE3084AE. It is running 98SE upgraded to xp pro, and that is where the problem lies. I need to format the disk, and it wont format using the c prompt.

Right click the drive click format or use Control Panel/Performance & Maintenance/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Disk Management

Tried that one already bud, and it basicly stuck out its tongue and said no way. I even tried the older fujitsu disk manager, and it wouldnt run either.

have you tried booting from a floppy and formatting it?

what drives/partitions have you got?

you cannot format your OS partition

If you want to do that, do a fresh install by telling setup to format the partition for you.

I tried going the floppy route, and it wouldnt work. I just downloaded the erase program from fujitsu, and am going to give that a shot later on. Oh and its an 8.4 gig, with no partitions.

ah... is it brand new perhaps?

that would mean it is completely empty, which the farkin dos thinghies can't handle. Strange enough is DOS 5.0 install able to do it.

Have you tried fdisk on it first?!?

You have to put a partition table on it first...

wait hold it.

you said it is running XP now.

that means the whole OS is on the disk, isn't it?

you can only format the disk if you use the win2000/XP installer or if you use fdisk from a boot floppy. (But why would you, if you have to install an OS anyway)

Ok, some thoughts on this interesting process, d is formatted, and no problem. The format on c was an interesting process, as this was the first time doing this with XP pro. Some notes, the XP os on C was an upgraded 98se, and it keeps leaving crap behind when formatting. Would the best way to do this be create another partition on C, it still has 3 gig free, and do a clean install on the new partition? After doing that, then formatting the old partition? this is all new to me so be gentle. LOL
