Problems with Toshiba DVD drive

I've got a Compaq Presario notebook, Model 710CA (Windows XP Home, 20 gig HD, AMD Duron 1 GHZ, 128 MB Ram), but as of late, the Toshiba DVD drive hasn't been cooperating at all. When I put a disc it, it seems to be reading it but then just stops...and it happens with all the discs I've tried. I've tried cleaning the lens, but it didn't work. I checked the device manager and it says that the drive is working fine, but I think otherwise. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Probably a hardware failure.

Try this before you replace the drive:

Go do the device manager and UNINSTALL the drive. On rare occasions this will work-- When you restart your computer windows will reload a fresh set of drivers.

If you need to replace the drive, go to www.newegg.com and order a replacement drive..and replace it yourself.
If you order a replacement from compaq/hp you will be paying through the nose for it.

Replacing a drive is fairly simple and straightforward (although you need a lot of little screwdrivers for working on notebooks).
