Question CMOS detects HDD but no boot

Hi All

I've been reading some threads trying to find answers to what happened today when I came back from work.

My PC will not boot up. I am getting the dreaded "Verifying DMI Pool Data....Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: Failure...
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

When I boot I see the usual:

Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG...

Primary Master: WDC WD600AB-00CDB0 22.04A22
Primary Slave: None....

and in the standard CMOS features:

IDE Primary Master: WDC WD600AB-00CDB0
......
Base Memory 640K
Extended Memory 523264K

IDE HDD Auto-Detection it recognises drive and returns

Capacity 60025MB
Cylinder 28733
Head 16
Precomp 0
Landing Zone 28732
Sector 255

If I carry on booting, I see that the hdd is recognised again:

Pri. Master Disk: LBA, ATA 100, 60025MB

but then the PC tries out the floppy drive, HDD and CD-ROM and as it can't boot from the HDD returns the error message above.

I can still feel the HDD spinning and the IDE cables are well connected and seated.

I have tried installing Linux on a different partition to see if I can recover data but the Linux boot CD won't see the C:\ drive either.

I tried GetDataBack for NTFS but I have not been able to connect using a Null Modem cable between my old laptop (from which I am writing) and the damaged desktop.

I'm really lost here. There is some important information in the HDD. It would not hurt that much having to format it to do a clean install but as I can't even have access to it, that can't be done either.

What should I do? Get another HDD and try to boot from that one? Can anyone explain how to get GetDataBack going (http://www.runtime.org/datarecovery.htm)?

Many, many thanks. Any help greatly appreciated!

Regards

RBR

Here you can find info on getdataback ~click~
It's not a 'howto' but maybe it can help you get started, and i suggest you take a look at the getdataback site, look here ~click~

Thank you Wobbel. Very useful link. My problem is that my other computer is a laptop and I was trying to connect to the crashed desktop via a null modem cable and I haven't been successful.

Is is it better to buy another HDD for the desktop and run GetDataBack from there?

Thanks again

Read this info from getdataback and download HDhost on that same page, try if that will work.

And if the OS on your 'crashed' system is Windows XP, read this thread, download the file in the first post and try to restore your system that way, it really works, i know, was very helpfull for me once.
