problems after new hard drive install

hi all,

ive just installed a new hard drive (120GB )

but its not detected, and my dvd rewriter has gone too
my reset button doesnt work and my floppy drive is constantly lit

i think the reset button and floppy drive light are related to the little leads i put back in the motherboard..

ive tried to detect the drive in the bios, but it just freezes and doesnt do anything until i turn off and back on again

any ideas?
(its probly somthin noobish, lol)

thanks

(winXP btw)

your floppy is due to a wrongly connected flatcable, (it should be the other way round) and your DVD and harddisk might be wrongly connected as well with that respect...

Who's the manufacturer of the drive?
Did it come with it's own boot/configuation floppy?
You'll need to look up the pin settings on the mainboard to correct the floppy/reset sw issue. Sometimes they're labeled on the board (really small). The cable for your floppy should be the only one of it's size and usually has a tab on it so it only connects one way.

As far as the dvd goes, was there a jumper setting to change it from master to slave? Is it on the same cable as the new HDD?

thanks for the replys, i changed all the flatcable's around but then it wouldnt detect anything, so i had to change them back so i could boot up.

the manufacturer is Western digital, it didnt come with anything (not even any screws lol)
there are some labels on the board, i think i got most of em in the right place lol.
the floppy drive works ok now
the dvd drive is set on secondry master, my new hdd is on primaryl slave

if i set it to auto detect everything in the bios at bootup, it starts to detect and then just freezes (cant press f4 to skip)

thanks for the help

Try booting from the Data Lifeguard Tools Utility to get your drive recognized. You can get a copy of it here

This is the utility that ships with with the HDD (in most cases) to help your system recognize and format the new larger drives.

As far as the CD-Rom issues, this still seems like a jumper issue to me. It sounds like you're using 2 EIDE cables there. What exactly is attached to each one there? I'd say if you're running 2 HDDs and 2 CD-Roms you should put your CD-roms together on your Secondary EIDE and use the Primary EIDE for your HDDs. The positionsing on the cables sometimes matters as well. If you put both CD-roms on the same cable, try making the one that attaches to the middle connector the master and the one on the end the slave using the jumper pins. The pin assignments are usually written on the CD-rom's case somewhere near the pins.

Hope this helps

if its a western digital drive try it as a slave without any jumpers on at all - sounds nuts but it works.

Shouldn't 1 of these be a Primary Master?
I have my CD Writer as Master & my new DVD Writer as Slave.

I made the DVD a slave, even though everybody told me not too...but, it works fine.

primary would be channel 0 on the motherboard (the main IDE slot) the secondary is the other one
