Can I Boot From External Cd Drive???
Help me somebody. My internal cd rom drive for some reason can't detect any CD at all, and I want to run a restore CD from my external Iomega cd-rw drive. Is it possible to boot from that drive...if yes...how??????

I am not sure how your external hooks up, but usually it depends on your motherboard. Check your bios to see what bootup options you have.. if your external drive is USB then I believe you need to have the option to boot from usb in your bios.

Check out this link as well: Click
It's not your type of drive, but there is a reference to a dos USB driver there as well as procedures for installing a Windows OS using a USB connection that may help you ~Peace DC

Although I do not know if it will recover the that corrupted file, it just might do the trick for you.
Try this: http://www.pctechtalk.com/forums/sho...&threadid=4316 And let us know if it helped.

Don't know if it will work for you, but here is a copy from my rig...Use at your own risk...don't blame me if it does not work. Do what greffov suggests first, try this only as a last result.
ntoskrnl.zip my other suggestion can be found here: http://www.pctechtalk.com/forums/sho...&threadid=4316

have you tried using system restore from dos before windows boots? not sure how you go about getting there but i think youll beed the original XP cd if i remember correctly... this is safer than just using a someone elses copy of file that your missing since your XP may have modified the file after updates etc.. as always.. try and backup your work first if you can.

He's got a restore cd(or so I understood) so those solutions won't work,I had a similar problem once.click here
Those restore cds are useless. You can't get into the repair console or do anything. You are not going to like what I have to say but... You'll have to reinstall, sorry

I guess the restore CDs are as worthless as anything. Thanks anyway for your counsel. I think I might as well install XP all over again.

Do you have a full version CD of Windows XP? did you try copying the file which LPDad attached up a bit higher with that same exact file which is corrupt? If you have a full version CD of WinXP you should be able to boot of it as long as your external CD rom is bootable through your BIOS. And then use the Repair Option.
