Little Pads on CPU?

I had ordered and now recieved an athlon xp (2500) cpu. On it, there are some foam pads that would obstruct the heatsink when it goes on. When I have installed athlons before, I have taken them off and they run without problem, except for a thin black dot that remains from each pad
Does anyone know whether there is a reason that they are on them or that I shouldn't take them off?

the reason is one of ballance, when you put the heatsink on, it only contacts with the core of the chip, although not required for the chip to run, they are desired to help keep the heatsink flush and level on the core for the best heat transfer. they also help to prevent damage (most offten noticable as chips on the edges and corners of the core itself).

my advice.. leave well alone.

you can always use a non-conductive shim to keep your HSF from cracking your CPU.

What kind of heatsink are you using, that you must remove the pads??? The pads serve a purpose.

I had used a pretty big heat sink for that older AthlonXP, and a similar one for the new computer. Thanks for the advice, now I will keep them on and try to put the heatsink on anyway...
