OK here is the deal ... The new PC has an 80 gig HD ..
I've installed win98 se onto the HD ... The HD is not partitioned .. Its just one huge 80 gig lump ... So here lies the dilema ... I want to dual boot with win98 and win xp ... this is basically how I want the HD to be partitioned .. 20gig win 98 20gig win xp 40gig files that can be accessed by both operating systems ... Is it going to be possible to do this without formating ? What are my options ? |

Ok well the first thing your going to want to do is set up Windows98 on the first one after you format it. The next part is somewhat simple. Just format the other hard drive. Make sure that all these hard drives are in FAT32. Unfortunatly Win98 cannot read NTFS. Make sure in the installation process somewhere there should be an option button right in the beggining and there will be an option that should say something like, I would like to choose the hard disk to install the operating system on. I don't remember exactly what it says. After that you're pretty much good to go with it. When you start up the PC after that just format the other hard drive and both of the operating system can use the last hard drive whenever needed. :smilewink

Ok wait scratch that post. LOL. I didn't know you only had one drive. If you want to set up 3 partitions you will have to reformat unless you only have 20GB being used now, and you have the rest free and unused. If not, easiest thing to do is go into Computer Management. On XP you can just go start - run - help and support and type it in the field, it will bring it to you. Other than that I don't know how to find it on 98. Once you set them up the way you want, they would all have to be FAT32, unless you don't want Windows98 to see or use the XP drive at all, then you can set up the XP drive as NTFS if you want. I recommend just keeping them all FAT32. After that just do what I said in the post above about how to install XP after you have installed 98.
Good luck

You kinda lost me ...
One step at a time ... I have win98 running on one 80 gig partition ... I want to split this partition into 3 partitions ... 20gig , 20gig ,40 gig... Can I use partition magic or do I have to format and Fdisk ? I'd rather not format but its not a big deal ... It is about 2 years since I used fdisk though ... Anyway ... there is only 2 gig used on the 80 gig HD ... Please try and explain in simple steps ... Its been a long day ! |

LOL ok this is what you do...
You have to reformat it... Do FDisk and set up the 3 partitions you want. After that set up windows 98 on the first one of course, then when you go to set up Windows XP make sure you somewhere before you install it, there should be something like Advanced Options, and in there should be something like I want to choose the drive and partition to install windows on. Click it, and then just and set up XP. After that you r good to go!
