Is it a clean install of WinXp or you just add some proggies that have a startup item? If it's the first one then your problem sounds 'big' enough to call it hardware (I think in most cases it would be just memory - RAM). And if the second case, see which program you installed - if more than one, try to install them one by one next time and restart after each install. This way you will know which program makes this for sure.

I had a similar problem a couple of times, out of nowhere my computer would randomly throw me a blue screen on start up, thing is it never stayed long enuff so i could read wot the prob was! Eventually i found out it had a prob with my video card...not that is was new or anythin - just decided it didnt like it. After a fresh format and reinstall seems to have been ok ... so far! dunno if thats the same thing but before u do anythin drastic wiv ur hdd try technobeasts advise if it still dusnt help go for a new install then at least you have tried all the options

Once you get your XP box to a very stable state, create a restore point so that if anything ever happens, you can go into the recovery console, restore a saved copy of the registry and when you're back up, set your computer back to your latest restore point!
