Imation 12 x 10 x 32 burner burned up by Nero Burning Rom
Well I attempted to make my very first burn with Nero 5.5.1 burning rom. Thought all was ok and when i clicked on the drive, noticed that it wasn't there. I pushed the eject button and noticed the light won't even light up.
They killed him! Is this normal after running Nero? When I tried to select the option of going from Nero Express to Nero, I got a popup screen that pointed me to the main Nero site in Germany. Am I missing something here? Why did my drive quit working? Is it really toast? My burner was an Imation 10 x 12 x 32. It would write at a fastest speed of 4 x. I am running Windows 2000 Pro on 512 mb of ram on a 40 gb hard drive. My CD Reader is a hi-val 52 x. I have had the most terrible time trying to get burner software to work. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, RANDAL ICQ 118179171 <bd652@scn.org> |

That just does not sound right, especially if your drive is fairly new. (I have had an old CDRom go out on me and it just stopped like you describe, but never a new drive)
Try going under the device manager and deleting the CDRW, then re-boot and let windows recoginize the drive and reload the drivers. You mentioned that you have had a lot of problems in the past with burning software, would you care to elaborate???

The same day I attempted to use Adaptec 4.03 and again the Imation drive was not recognized. I also tried another program called Easy Burn and came up with the same problem. I thought there might be something wrong with the drive if it weren't for the fact that the Nero Software did seem to burn the CD. I have attached a copy of both my Info test file created by Nero as well as the log file. Maybe you might see something on here that I didn't catch. Under "device manager" in Win2k there doesn't seem to be any problem -- no yellow question marks or exclamation points.

Question.. did you ever get the problem with the IRQ steering corrected? Just curious if this problem could be related.
I dont think that the new drive would have gone bad just off hte bat there.. but of course there is always an exception when you least expect it.

IRQ problems probably not related
The problem with the erroneous IRQ setting and the lack of burner identification in Nero and other programs do not appear to be related.
I ended up solving the IRQ problem by doing a reinstall of all software. I tried restoring from a backup done with the backup program that came with Win2k, but the backup consistantly restored more files than what I designated. I do recall reading a posting by another user indicating that he had the same IRQ problem and ultimately the only way to fix it was to do a full reinstall. Apparently the IRQ conflict was caused by a transient failure of the plug-n-play features of the operating system and bios. I am not sure what to think about the problem with the Imation Burner. A disk speed utility in Nero does recognize the burner even though the burner won't light up or eject. The burner was lighting up and ejecting prior to Nero being installed. I can't imagine Nero being the problem. I did send the log and info file to Nero and am waiting to hear back from them. One thing worth mentioning is that I encountered some problems running the Adaptec Software moments before. The adaptec software required a patch that added something to the registry. I still have the patch, but wonder if the additional registry setting may have diminished the drives ability to function with Nero or any other program? I am not sure how to reverse the registry setting. I do have a registry editor and I did go back and check the registry for any entries that may have been from the Adaptec Program. I made sure that all of the entries were removed before installing the Nero. I am running a recent version of the aspn32.dll file. Nero is not the only burning program that wouldn't recognize the drive -- Hot Burn Pro, Easy Burn, Adaptec and Nero Burn all wouldn't recognize the drive. However, the drive continued to read, rotate, eject, and spin prior to Nero installation.
