I’ve just purchased a Western digital 60-gig 7200rpm hard drive (my system already has a 20 gig 5400rpm) I would like to have both drives in my machine.
(Now here’s the question) Witch one would you use as the master the faster drive or the slower one? Also I’ll be attempting this install over this Easter weekend any advise (important or otherwise) would be greatly appreciated. Further more, you’ll know I really screwed up if ya don’t see me around for a while…lol . The specifics for my machine are below. (BTW…my currant drive is partitioned)

I would suggest plugging in the 60 gig as the Primary Master hard drive.. then plug in the 20 gig as the secondary IDE slave. (second notch in the middle of the cable conenctor). Make sure you CHECK the jumpers on both drives to make sure htey are set right. When you first boot you will see them both display on the boot screen right away as primary and secondary fixed disks.
When you partition and format that drive. the thing I did was make a 2 gig partition just for the OS (windwos).. then I put the rest of the space as one big lump. Reason for this.. is if you ever need to reinstall windows you can just format that one partition and not lose anything or worry about losing all your things. Once you have it partitioned.. then isntall windows on the 2 gig partition and once you areup and running you can copy anything off of your 20 gig drive you need. Then you can format your 20 gigger.. and use it as a backup drive.. or a storage drive etc. Definately good to try and keep the OS on a seperate partition though.. keeps things simple and more clean that way. ![]() And good luck bud

Good advise guys; I'm going to do it on Monday (got Easter stuff goin on for the next couple'o'days). Also, thanks for the 'Well Wishing' I'm gonna need it ...lol :p (Now if this 'Pentium' was more like a 'small block Chevy engine' it would be a different story entirely!)

Allright I managed (somehow
) but... now my drive letters are all screwed up. My old 20gig had 'partition magic' on it. It was labled 'C' & 'D'.I hooked up my new 60 gig as master, created 3 - 20 gig partitions in windows (wich were 'G''H' & 'I') and installed 'XP' *-* (I figured I would be able to change the drive letters later with 'PM') I ran PM & merged the 20 gig (it's now just 'C'), and cleaned out the drive (on purpose...I want to use it as an archive) ...Now the problem (u'll prolly think I'm pretty anal but... ) It's driving nuts that my system is booting to drive 'G' , and 'PM' will change the drive letters but it issued me a warning... "don't do it chump... your risking screwing up all your files ". Now I understand that everything that runs my system relates to 'G' drive, is there any quick fix for this problem, should I ignore PM and do it anyway , or should I just shudup and live with it? P.S. everything seems to be running just fine...it's really just those damn drive letters!!!

OK, Im not quite clear on this setup.
If I am not mistaken, your C drive contains the boot files XP needs to run from G drive. This is an OK setup if you have two OS's but not really if you are running only one. The only way to fix it is to redo the whole ball of wax, starting with your preffered drive (I assume the 60 gig) set up as C:drive. This is a very important designation as computers will only boot from the C: drive. WindowsXP can be installed on another drive (unlike other versions of windows) but it MUST boot from C:. I think this is your problem. |
