CDRW and DVDRW problems

Hey guys I am having some problems with these drives. Early on this week I decided to up grade to a DVD burner. I got a I/O magic from circuit city. Well it install fine and had no problems at first. I was able to burn some audio and i manage to make one one svcd. Well it decided to stop working. I would put a blank media in and it wouldnt read any disks that I would put in.The light would come on for a few seconds then start blinking.

Well I tried to uninstall everything, from the software to the driver. Still the same problem. So I figured I might had a bad burner. So I put my old CD burner in and is not doing right either. I tried to burn a img file it went though the burning process but it didnt burn right. I noticed that it did burn but not like normal. If that makes any sence. Well I wanted to do a reformat on my pc. I figured it would work after the format. Well I still get the same problem.

Any sugestions what to do? I was going to take it back, but I think something is wrong with my pc since my old burner isnt working right.

Hope this all makes sence to you all

How many devices do you currently have installed in your PC? And what Power Supply do you have? It sounds almost as if may be your PSU is either going bad.. or just doenst have enough juice to power everything in your PC (possibly).

How many watts is it? And how many drives / devices do you have attached to your power supply?

This may or may not help.

When I got my DVD burner, it would burn the disk, verify it to be OK, but I simply could not get it to read it. After much fussin around, I finally switched it to the primary ide slot, by itself. (no master/slave) It has worked great ever since!

PSU = your power supply unit
The big thing on the back of your computer where you plug in the power cord. Has fans, makes noise. makes sparks when you stick a screwdriver into it.

I would have to agree with cirga on this one I had a simular problem but when I added some additional fans in my pc. My burner went on the blink sometimes my burner would just disapear from my computer. That is what it sounds like. Another thing you may want to check is the IDE cable I have also had one of those go bad on a friends Pc and it worked sometimes and other times it did not. guess they had a broke wire in it or something. Hope this helps out alittle.

If you decide to get new cables for your unit i would suggest getting some rounded cables jab-tech has some really good prices. These give you more room and help to improve airflow. They also have some good deals on PSU here.

200 watts is definatly the problem, and the reason you noticed it now is because dvd burners suck the life out of old power supplys, it sounds like the dvd burner asked for more than your psu could give and its showing the strain, causing the slightly less juice hungry cdrw to fail as well
