Unhappy corrupt icons

hello everyone,

I have a little problem...you see i was playing around with my sustem nad thought that i'd change the look,so i went to themexp.com and got some themes and installed them i decided that i'd change the icon too...

and here is where the trouble began..

i used iconphile(a program to change the icons of your desktop) to change the icons..but i think sopmeting went terribly terribly wrong 'cause soon i discovered that windows was using the icon that it uses for the unknown files for my drives ...then the mp3's,wma and many other icons changed too. They all look like the default for "unknown".

no matter what i did to change them back to default it just wouldn't work!!! nothing then iconphile started giving me errors...it crashed my system..i uninstalled the thing...i installed iconpackager to restore my icons but it wouldn't restore my drives' icons or the others thta iconphile messed up!!:yell :yell .

someone suggested that i used tweak ui(one of microsoft's powertoys)it messed up my icons even more no icons formy drives ,many other files AND now tweak ui has messed up my icons at i6 bit depth all look like crap:with noise, low quality..

this is really driving me nuts!!
:yell

*breaths deeply*

any way i was wondering if any of you guys could point me in the right dorection on how i can get my desktop back to the way it was...i'd be REALLY REALLY REALLY greatful.

thanks a ton

Lion7718 will become famous soon enough
Have you tried doing a System Restore to get it back to the way it was before?

Oh boy.. thats a toughie. Between Iconphile and TweakUI that can really tweak your system to a point of "better off restoring then trying to figure out whree to go".

Have you tried uninstalling the themes and the Iconphile program? What you really need to do is retrace exactly what you did and undo it all..

IN otherwords.. start with Tweak UI.. and any option you changed in there change it back.. reboot. then work on iconphile.. see if you can get it to refresh.

Also.. check your computer startup items.. there is a chance that some program is booting up with windows and presetting your icons.

Hope you can find it...

Wow that is a tough one. I considermyself pretty knowledgable and would still either system restore or backup my files and start over.

I've done this myself and was unable to retrace my steps. But that was Win Me and a corruption issue.

Try This

Open the Windows Explorer, Click Tools, Folder Options, View, and Select Show hidden files and folders. ShellIconCache is a hidden file. Shutdown Windows, restart your computer, hold the Ctrl key (or press the F8 key just before the Windows starts firing-up) as the computer boots, Select Start in safe mode from the resulting menu, boot all the way up to Windows in the safe mode. Next, in the Windows Explorer, click on the plus sign next to the C: drive to expand it if isn't expanded, click on the Windows folder, scroll down the right Explorer window pane, find the ShellIconCache file and click on it to highlight it, press the Delete key, and click Yes when Windows asks you if you want to send the file to the recycle bin, shutdown Windows, and restart your computer (in the normal mode).

Start-> RUN -> CMD -> sfc /scannow

(you will need the XP CD in your drive to do this)
15 minutes or so and your icons should be back to normal.
