CD-Rom driver problems

I recently decided to update my drivers by goin to Device
Manager, after i updated my drivers for CD ROM/HARD
DRIVE/Graphics Card/Sound i restarted and i logged back
on. I then found that my CD ROM was constantly lit, and
that it has disappeared from My Computer..i tried to
update drivers again but its not there..
i havent opened my PC at all to
change any of the ribbon cables because it was working
fine before i updated drivers. the cd rom is shown when i
boot the pc up but thats all i see of it.
ive tried removing the driver i cant uninstall it
the ironic thing is the driver was installed through windows update!

Make and model: Samsung SW-208

If anyone has an answer i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

C0lin

Lion7718 will become famous soon enough
Are you on XP?
Try My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Devise Manager
Click on the + to see you CD Drive, right click it choose Properties, than click on Drivers...from there you can rollback to the previous driver.

hey man this is a great site to get drivers from and it is free to register. http://www.driverguide.com/

you could always check your bios to make sure they did not get changed in the process. I know i have somehow had my floppy drive turned off without me doing it. I went into my bios and turned it back on then it worked again. I still don't know how it got turned off though. This is just an idea.

I just got back home from my 4 month trip, and I got on my comp and it won't access my cdrw or cdrom. It shows them on the device manager but it gives this message:Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19).
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling them.I have ran windoctor.I tried updating drivers.None of this has solved the problem.
Here is what I am running..Winxp w/ thunderbird 1.0gig...atapi 52x cdrom and lg cdrw ced 8080b...

The only thing I have ran is norton windoctor. What regedit software would you suggest I run?I have also noticed a second problem with my comp now.Sometimes when I restart it, I will get absolutely no video sent to my monitor.I can restart it a 100 times and I will still get no video.I have to physically unplug the power cord from my comp, and then plug it back it.After I do this, it runs like a champ with the exception of the cdrom/cdrw problem.

c0lin, for the cd rom problem i personaly would try a clean install of windows, this time without the win 98 updates, as imo they are more hassle than they are worth, every pc i ever tryed updating that ran 98 had some problems once rebooted, some ( most in fact ) didnt even boot as far as the desktop without a bsod.

bluetailfly3, tech school the first thing they teach is 'always check your post' the second this is 'cables cables cables' .

if your drives are showing up ok in post chances are its a corupt registry issue, and its either time to reach for either a restore point or the windows cd, as for the boot problem that sounds bio's related, and could be a job to track down.

ill try and dig you up some digagnostic software to help you track down both your problems, if i can find one ill post it here.

the checks your pc does before starting to load the operating system.

I tried a clean install of windows.

I even went as far as doing a low-level format on my hard drive

nothing has worked

as promised a link to the diagnostic software i told you about, this is a cracking bit of kit and should hopefully tell you what the problem, it is a program you have to pay for, but a trail version is available.

http://www.eurosoft-uk.com/products.htm

the program you want is called pccheck.

could be the primery display is still set to pci and your using agp,
or it could even be a corrupt bois, without seeing the bios myself i couldnt tell, as there are so many different settings that effect it.
one thing i would try tho, make a note of your current settings then reset the bios to default values. this will tell you if it was caused the the 'tinkering' factor.

if theres any setting your unsure of , go to www.whatis.com and do a seach on it there to tell u what it is/ does, you could try the radiobot geekspeak dictionry, but its not finished yet so may not have to answers you need

BTF could these problems be associated with your PSU? I know Cirga and a lot of others have been having problems lately and some of their symptoms sound similar to yours.

Ok..I opened up my comp..I switched my cdrom from slave to master, switched the cdrw from master to slave...I rechecked the connections again.I flashed the bios..Still nothing.. I updated the bios and still nothing..However, I think the video issue has been solved...I tried to get that diagnostic software that RipperRoo suggested but when I tried to get the trial version they never emailed me back so I could get it.I think I may try just running one drive at a time to see if that solves anything..Here is my motherboard if that helps anyone out..

I am running a Athlon Thunderbird 1.0gig on a ABIT KT7 motherboard.
