AMD or Intel

I know a lot of people out there have favorites but i would like to know why?
What are the benefits of one compared to the other?

Oh Dear...This could be another WAR!!!

Seriously, It is based alot on personal preferences.
They each have advantages and disadvantages when compared to each other.

Six of one, Half a dozen of another.

I happen to like AMD because they are less expensive and (most of the time) often out perform a comparable Intel chip (it really depends on what programs you are running. Intel does better in some things, AMD in others.

Intel chips tend to run cooler and won't burn up if your HSF falls off or stops working.

The BIG difference is comming..when AMD finally releases the 62 bit OPTERON. This will run 32 and 64 bit applications and will really smoke!!! The Intel version is LIMITED to running 64 bit applications ONLY.

You can bet we will have lots of reviews and comparisons when the Opteron is released.

I agree. Personal preference. I have had lots of problems with AMD chips in general personally.. and therefore have stuck with Intel. The only way I will go AMD is if I have enough fans to keep my PC cool. Running at 160 degrees Faranheit scared the bejeesus out of me.

But of course I only had an orb fan on it. Usually AMD is considered the "computer gamesr" chip.. because it tends to handle games alot smoother.. but then again Intel does a pretty decent job as well.

Although I have never built a computer from the ground up I have many friends who have.

Most opt for the AMD chips as they appear to be a better value than Pentium. I say appear because I think they spend the difference on cooling apperatii and fuss incessantly over optimum operating temps.

I may consider the Opteron, but all things being equal, and since I don't build computers on a monthly basis, I think my preference would be Pentium.

I'm just using a CPU fan. My box has been on for about a year and a half (with roughly a total of 24 - 36 hours of reboot / off time) and it hasn't melted yet.

Well thats actually quite a triumph. I guess I just have bad luck. Left my AMD processor on for a week straight.. and the computer shut off one day. Would not boot again. Processor had completely fried.

I think AMD's hate me.

LOL

one reason amd are cheaper is they dont spend money on advertising , the chips are so good they sell by word of mouth .

plus the fact that when they do die , they make kool keyrings :-)

Actually, I just recently upgraded my processor to a P4 2.4Ghz (533Mhz FSB), and I got it cheaper than any equivalent AMD chip.

The only real diference I see between the two chips is the price tag. Of course there are benchmarks showing AMD "ahead" (by some measly amount of points) of the equivalent Pentium. But Intel also shows up ahead of AMD. Especially with these last processors (2.8GHz and up) from what I've seen Intel's and generally supirior to those of AMD.
As for the 64bit chip why would you want one of those? I mean those chips are for processing Huge amounts of data, not for the average PC user... And another thing you think those 64bits chips are going to be cheap??

I myself use Intel, they are stable, long lasting and for me that is enough.

AMD are the best processors by far but they get quite hot.

funny you said that, i heard very similar said a few years ago just as the 1ghz athlons were hitting the shops.

no matter how fast things get there will always be software companys who's programs require just that little bit more,
take graphics cards, the sale of those is almost 100% games driven (ever try playing UT2003 in high detail mode on a TnT˛?).

as for pure grunt number crunching, i know a few seti crunchers rubbing their hands at all the units a 64 bit chip will crunch in a day
