Motherboard problemo?

Hey guys - ok so i have a problem. What it is is - I had a computer it has been working ok, but it began freezing every so often and somtimes when i first begun the pc, it would give 1 long beep, then a gap one long beep and the screen doesnt fire up. So this happens to be a dram detection problem - no ram is found. So i left it a couple of attempts and yay pc turns on.

So i left it like this for a while, but then what has just happened is now all i get is this beep and i cannot start the pc at all. I have tested a different ram module which i know works in each of the 2 sdram modules, and tested ddr ram in the ddr ram modules and each time i get this beep. This same beep occurs if i have no ram and try to bootup. So i tried videocard, replaced with a working one, yet again, same beep. The cpu is working fine tested that in a seperare pc and its not overheated.

I also tried removing all IDE drives but same thing and also tried clearing cmos to no avail. Just checking for an opinion - im thinking the board is a dead one - what do you think.

Any ideas i really appreciated some thoughts on this topic so thanks a lot guys.

Spec is - athlon 1500xp
256 sd ram
win xp 20 gig hdd
I think it may be a jetway or asus motherboard - model = 867AS its fairly new and fairly decent.

Thanks a lot guys - i do have a good computing knowledge so no stupid things to try like does the fan start etc - as of course it does im not that dim!

Thanks again guys

Andy

a lot of info to swallow in one go, and some confusion

are you saying the board takes both SD & DDR ram and that it works ok with SDRAM but doesnt work with DDR?

Sorry for confusion yes it takes both and it gives the same response to both types, sd and ddr i.e the continuous long beep, then nothing, then long beep - which means no dram detected and thus i feel maybe the 4 banks are dead?

one lat try, boot it up without a graphics card but with the memory in, then it should beep diferently to signify no graphics card - leave the memory in place and replace the graphics card and try a boot again. its a long shot, but this is how i had to ***emble my first asus board or it didnt find them memory.

good luck.

Testing the replacement ram in your PC doesnt mean much-unless you are certain that ram is fully compatible-density issues come to mind. I'd memtest86 the old ram first, if that checks out fine, then I'd suspect the memory controller. Use each slot individually, and use only one stick ( if you have multiple). And verify that second "known good " ram module is fully comptaible.

Wild guess also-try looser ram timings. I'm ***uming (if you overclock) you went back to default...clear cmos and start over. Its a long shot but worth a try.
