Locked Bartons
Just read on another forum that all the latest Bartons are now factory locked. Does this mean that you can't now overclock a new Barton? That's the reason most people opt for Bartons in the first place innit ???

Wow I have an older XP 2500 Barton chip and I can change everything on it.. looks like you are right. They actually are manufacturing them with locked multipliers now.
But with the FSB going up to max at 466Mhz you shouldnt need to change hte multiplier.. really the best option is to just get a mobo that can hit 400 Mhz.. and then get some good RAM. A little odd nonetheless.... |

Latest craze in overclocking circles are the Mobile Bartons, all of them are unlocked (2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 ) they run on 1.45v so they run cooler than the standard desktop Bartons. People are reporting good O/Cing figures with Nforce2 boards......

Hmmm, I recently bought an 2500+ XP, I mistakenly put it on 400MHz FSB, ran like a 3200+, but was instable as hell, windows wouldn't even install (STOP errors), linux just reported a kernel panic with the funny message: "Did you overclock your CPU?"...
So I somehow think that overclocking the thing doesn't make you happy anyways. |

I know that's true, but I like reading the overclocking forums, some of those guys are fanatical about number crunching, and will go to any extreeme measure to squeeze out that last bit of speed from a cpu.

yeah, lol, if 10 minutes is enough, you can keep it running for that long. lol
Just tried it with a heavy compile job. LOL |

Smart of them to get the mobile chips.. still strange to me that AMD locked them in the first place.. I wonder if they were having to replace quite a few on people who lied about OCing the chips? So strange... you would think that once its sold they are done with it.. who cares if you OC or not. OCing can be great.. but considering it does tear up the lifespan of your CPU chip and can cause heat problems if you dont have the proper cooling.. I have always avoided doing it. I am a hardcore PC gamer.. but not "that" hardcore.. at least not yet Who knows.. with all the new games coming out I may have to pull all the juice possible out of my 2500. hehe Thanks for the heads up on the mobile chips Prez ![]() |

The reason why the Bartons were locked was because AMD wanted to increase sales for their FX line which still remains unlocked. Another reason that I have heard of was, computers would be sold with lower model Bartons (2500+) overclocked and sold as a higher model, which isn’t right.
The following models have been locked (Barton & Thouroughbreds): AQZFA 0335 MPMW AQZEA 0338 AQXCA 0340 AQXEA 0341 MPMW and VPMW AQXFA 0339 AQXFA 0340 MPMW AQYFA 0340 TPMW and UPAW and WPAW AQYFA 0341 TPMW AQYFA 0342 AQZEA 0341 TPMW and RPMW and RPDW AQZFA 0339 UPMW and TPMW AQZFA 0340 XPMW AQZFA 0341 TPMW and SPMW and XPMW AQZFA 0342 TPMW and UPMW AQZFA 0341 VPMW AQZFA 0347 XPMW Thoroughbred JIXIB 0339 Thoroughbred AIXHB 0340 UPMW Thoroughbred AIXHB 0341 SPMW The following models are still unlocked: AQXFA 0340 MPMW and TPMW and UPMW and VPMW AQYFA 0340 UPAW AQZEA 0339 UPMW AQZFA 0339 VMPW AQZFA 0339 UMPW AQZFA 0340 UPMW and SPMW and MPMW AQZFA 0342 TPMW and UPMW Thanks to Harris Walktin from http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/ fourm for this information. |
