the athlon 2800 will handle the latest games without problems, and burning stuff to disk will hardly touch it, esp. with 512 of ddr backing it up
- good choice

Thanks ... i appreciate the feedback ... I was under pressure from the salesman to by a PC that had a P4 chip running around 2.6 or 2.7 ghz and had "hyperthreading". I remembered reading (months ago) many of your posts conncerning AMD vs. Pentium ... and recalled that the majority opinion wsa very heavily behind AMD. I told the salesman that I'd prefer a PC with an AMD chip, "thank you very much", and got the distinct impression he thought i was crazy. These forum topics have been very helpful to me .... I'm learning alot just reading the threads & various comments. keep up the good work ...
Your friendly neighbourhood penguin ... ork, ork, ork ... anyone got a sardine ??? |

OK ... now you've got me worried re: temperatures.
Q. Is this new HP pavillion a 320n I just purchased adequate "as is" (out of the box) to keep the Athlon 2800 it comes equipped with at an appropriate temperature ? I just assumed that HP's engineers had thought that one through, and as long as I made no modifications to the "guts" of my new pc ... the Athlon chip would be "happy" in the box HP put it in. Now you're suggesting I have to add-on additional fans & heat sinks ?? yikes !! what's a poor penguin to do ? it's hard enough to put sardines on the table, without sinking more money into this 'puter ... more comments appreciated ! Q. You said ... "HP ... oh man" ... was that a bad choice in manufacturer ? (was just reading the article posted today re: HP's President blasting the public for "media piracy" and vowing that "starting next year, all of HP's products will have copyright protection built right into them") Was that what you were referring to when you said "HP ... oh man" ?? Just curious Many thanks, everyone. Your input & advice is very much appreciated by this newbie Penguin

I think it was more of a funny warning some people here have had problems with HP computers but i am a firm believer that as long as you treat the machine right it will return the favor. If you have any other just ask us.

Dont worry about the "HP" brand. I have co workers at my geek job who swear by them right now. Yes.. HP used to really suck.. I remember dealing with problems with all of their machines a few years ago... but lately they have done a pretty decent job.. so I decline bagging on them anymore. Just my opinion of course.
As for the salesmen telling you thta the P4 with hyperthreading is better.. well technically yes you could say that. But the Hyperthreading technology is meant to be used with 2 identical sticks of RAM. In otherwords.. having one 512 meg chip would not make a lick of difference. HT technology helps the CPU sync better with two sticks of Ram plugged into your mobo.. and allows more "bandwidth" for data within your CPU and motherboard and RAM. What you will hear often though.. is that AMD is the PC gamers choice.. which I agree with. For an office environment.. Pentium is good to go with. But as a hardcore gamer.. I'll never buy an intel chip again. AMD owns my loyallty now. ![]() If you got the PC from HP dont worry about tempeatures. Sure it cant hurt to maybe buy a new heatsink/fan combo.. but if you dont touch it and there is a problme just go after HP's throat on it.. they will replace anything. Big companies have that luxury.

Ok
My Dad has a p4 2.5 and it is pretty sweet. I like to use it. For an office environment it owns! Like, it is super fast, and can run man apps at once. One advantage of the p4 is that if the fan breaks down, it is to the best of my understanding that the chip detects the heat throttles down. But as I said, I use an AMD. I had a choice. I love it for games, phile sharing and office apps.
