Unhappy My CPU, IT BURNS!!!

Someone PLEASE tell me why oh why my Athlon 2600 runs at 55 degrees C when idle and over 60 when active!!!! HELP HELP! I have a Volcano 9, wot is my problem!!!??
Would overdoing it with thermal grease/compound cause a problem? I say this because i have a sneeking suspicion i put too much. Though i REALLY hate taking the Volcano 9 off and re-mounting it, my precious little CPU cant enjoy being crushed by that beast and i think the clips on my socket a ready to go bye, bye !!!

Actually could I just ask, anyone else find it incredibly hard to mount volcano 9s? I always find it such a struggle. I clip the one side down and then use a screwdriver to push the other side down, is this correct? Im always scared my die is gonna get damaged. Any tips?

Someone please advise me!

Cheers,

K-C

pleased you asked, because my shuttle runs an AMD 1.3 with liquid PSU cooling, and it runs at a staggering 42 - 44 degrees, maybe we can both get help on this one.

good luck

I got a volcano 9 on my main system and they r a pain to fit, yup u did it rite, hook the 1 end over and use the screwdriver to push down and hook the other over.

As the for the temps ur gettin that seems about on par with mine, mines only a 1600XP and i get 58 degrees idle. Although AMDs do run notoriously hot, mines been at this temp for months now and ive not noticed any problems tbh.

However i did put a coolermaster fan (cost me £5 from the market) on my friends 2600XP the highest temp that has seen is 45! Go figure, it led me to the conclusion that maybe the volcano 9 was the problem. But dont quote me on that as ive not looked into it any further cus as i say ive not noticed my system freezing or not being able to cope cus its too hot.

Dont worry about the V9 crushing ur cpu - it wont it just sits nicely on top of it keeping it cool (hopefully)! As for the thermal grease yes putting too much on will cause a slight prob but usually nuthing major - unless u put 3/4 tubes on lol so really wudnt worry on that score

Although im afraid i cant offer a solution i hope it helps to know that ur not alone! Also eventhough u know wot temp the cpu is at have u had any lockups etc that could b related the temp of ur cpu?

Too much thermal paste will cause higher temps.

you also need good airflow through the case. If you do not have good AIRFLOW through the case then it will run hot no matter what you do.

Make sure you use Arctic silver (I use AS3, although there is a newer version out)...Follow the directions on the www.arcticsilver.com website..and DON't overdo it.

The BEST advice I can give (based on experience) is to get yourself a THERMALRIGHT SLK-800 heatsink and put a nice big, QUIET 80 mm fan on it.

My Overclocked XP 2800 runs at 39-41 (43 under FULL LOAD) when the ambient Room temp is 30 C/86 F. (Ask Berks-- he was running high temps and could not hear himself think..now he is Cool and Quiet..and his Wife is happy too, although I cannot take credit for that)

Thanx for ur replys. Pasty nope i not had any lockups so far, but thats not what im worried about, i want my processor to have a nice life expectancy. When temps get to 60 the little line on the graph begins to take a nasty fall. but yeh it is very re-assuring to know that im not alone, im just dissappointed. I mean the v9 is rated to deal with Athlon 3400!!! so i dont see any excuse for temps with a 2600 over 45 or so.

I actually have another PC with a V9 and it runs at about 38-42degrees (its an athlon 1800).

LPDad your words of wisdom once again are very much obliged. I always thought why not just get nice heatsink and stick a fan on it, well now uve shown it its worth while, but ill save that for when and if i upgrade in the future. Cheers.

If any1 else has problems with V9s plz let me know.

Motherboard Monitor is a very good one.

If you have an ASUS motherboard you can use Asus Probe, but this will only work with an ASUS mobo, as far as i know

aida32 is a great program for telling the temps, as well as pretty much anything else you want to know about your system. It will identify your motherboard, and sound, and video boards. Its worth checking out.

PS someone want to give it a try, and give a report back about how they find it works? LP you would be a good one to give a report about it.http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php

best way to keep your pc cool is to add some intake fans on one side, and extractor fans on the opposite so that you get good airflow as mentioned before.. my temp dropped from 45 - 35 just by adding one intake fan.. and thats under full load while playing halo on maxed out settings.

My problem is that my hetsink doesnt even get hot in the first place. So somewhere its a slow transfer of heat and ill blame that on my thermal compund (£2 "CoolMaster" stuff).

The hunter: yup aida is a great program for finding temps too, but its a bit inconvenient and doesnt give hard drive temps (if your hard drive does have a sensor that is). Otherwise I use AIDA32 for any info i need about anything about my PC's innerds. good choice!

Can anyone recommend a good online shop for thermal compund? Im looking for Arctic Silver or other higher quality 'stuff'. Any recommendations???

Cheers.
