I'm going to wait for motherboards with AGP 8x and PCI Express. What is clear is that I will not get nForce3, too many trouble already with nForce2 ...

I was originally going to wait as well, but last month my main daddy computer shit the bed, so i gathered up all the working pieces, and made this dinosaur out of its DNA. So I really need a main machine, been surviving on this old beast, but I can't last much longer! So might as well jump on the 64 train, mainly just to try it out, least I wont have to upgrade everything again when i decide to try out the 64 windows.

I'm going to wait a little more. I want a mobo with AGP and PCI Express, I'm not willing to throw my GeForce FX 5900-XT.

Well i'm now a thorough Dually convert, so my next big change will probably be Nocona based. It's just a case of waiting for the best Overclocking option - there always is one

I saw an HP (Pavilion A530N) AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz at my local computer store, for a good price. What do you guys think about this one ? Good chip, or not ??

Yep, it's a good entry-level 64 bits processor. The fastest right now is the XP 4000+ (if you don't count the FX-55 which is extremely expensive). Look if video card and everything else is up to the same level. This, of course, depends completely on what are you going to do with your computer.

Not bad if you don't want to build a PC by yourself. Couldn't find info for the MoBo however

First of all, how is everyone? Just got Internet again so i'm back around

I got bored of my old rig! (Plus I was tired of being deafened...) so I went really boring and went for a Shuttle with an AMD64 Socket 939 (Newcastle) 3500+. It's tasty, but I was rather disappointed in the multitasking slowness compared to a P4 with Hyperthreading. The good thing is though that hopefully my mobo will be able to support Dual Core CPU's in the future, when they speed up a bit and cool down alot...

Slower multitasking compared with a P4? With what programs you get slower performance? In mosts tests AMD64 beats P4 with or without Hyperthreading. What's more with some programs Hyperthreading does not play well and you get lower performance with it (games for instance, almost all games are designed to run in single processors).

And yes, the benefit of being able to swap your current CPU for a new AMD64 X2 with nothing more than a BIOS update is a big plus! Unfortunately those won't be widely available until probably after summer.

Yup exactly what I had in mind!

In regards to the multitasking though, when loading up several programs at once the system can be become bogged down and slow, compared to using HT (Or even my old dually) the overall system responsiveness is nowhere near as good. Hopefully, being a dually operator yourself, you can see the difference

I suffer no slowdowns loading programs. Even with a large game like FarCry. And I can tell that my system is pretty fast because when playing on-line I'm usually the first player that appears before all other computers had time to load the next level and get in . Maybe there is something wrong, don't know, do you have the latest driver? Do you use the nVidia IDE driver? Maybe nForce 4 has improved disk transfer, because that seems to be your problem.

Nah it's not in reference to loading a game for example - i'm talking about throwing a WinRAR Zip up, Mediaplayer playing, while encoding a movie and running SETI all at the same time, which I tend to do alot. I'm generally very impressed with performance - loading games and compressing films is well quick!

Then it may be one of the circumstances where P4 with HT enabled does help! I don’t use WinRAR myself, I prefer TotalCommander for all my file managing needs, and it seems to play very well with other running programs .

BTW I like Shuttle barebones, and your sure is a sweet rig! I have a Shuttle SN45GV3 plugged to my TV and it's nice to play some games and use it as Home Theater PC!
