no big deal, within a few hours of frying it i'd sorted out the purchace of an xp 1600+ as a temp replacement and reserved a b core 1800 that will be available within a month, annoying tho, as now i have 2 mobo's sat around doing nothing instead of one and im forced to use my 1.2 athlon machine to fill the gap.

lucky i got a spare pc huh?

Wanna see some frying?

http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20010917/

toms hardware takes the heatsink/fans off of two intel and two amd processors

Very interesting reading.

Not only did the Intel chips survive with out any damage, but there was no data loss. I think the extra cost of Pentium goes into engineering. They are designed to slow down as the themperature rises. But even without the heatsink and fan the P4 continued to run, without damage!

The really scary thing was how fast the AMD chips fried. Took a fraction of a second after removing the heat sink.

Tell me about it

AMD are when it come's to heat, as i found out to my cost.

update on this item, I got a replacement chip (at last) but couldnt get a good core, so this bugger runs at a constant 51

Well you can run the Barton Core at 70 celcius for about an hour.. and still not fry it. Perhaps I was just lucky? But boy what a tank that core is.

Love it!

I can run the TBird at 82ºC for an hour and no problem! Those TBirds could be used to cook or something XD

BTW, have you seen a video at Tom's Hardware (the one that Rastagard links avobe) when they removed the heatsink from 4 different processors to see the results? (P4, P3, TBird, MP) The P4 just slowed down once the heatsink was removed, the P3 stopped (crashed, but no damage), both AMD were burnt in less than 2 seconds! (you could even see smoke).

Yes I saw that video.. and wow.. impressive to see the difference in engineering on all four chips..
