American peeps

Do you guys in America have adverts on TV for Intel and AMD? Over here in the UK the only advertising AMD has in on the sides of boards at football matches. The general enthusiast like us lot on here know all about AMD and how good their chips are, but im betting on the general public not knowing anything about them. If they do know anything, they'll say 'Intel inside' because that very powerful bit of marketing says that if you havent got an Intel inside, you are using an inferior product.

I've always been curious as to why AMD dont advertise on TV over here as it would make a massive impact on people who may want to buy a PC. What does anybody else think about this?

They do not have the budget that Intel has.
They dump all their money into R&D and production, and that is a fairly good reason why they can keep the price of their chips so much less than an comperable Intel chip.

TV is Expensive to advertise on, Magazines, etc are much less and last longer.

Lol cheers guys. I'm aware that AMD is in the dumps financially and cant afford any slip ups with this new Opteron chip. I thought however that they could at least afford 1 advert in prime time a week just to get the name into people's heads. Ah well, it's their loss hehe.

I think Intel gets most of its blurb from Compaq/Gateway/Dell adverts...

im guessing they get FAVOURS from intel and for that they happily use intels chips.. AMD really need to strike a deal with major pc manufacturers.

Over here in UK they currently only have 2 manufacturers that i know of on their side.. TIME, and TINY... both of which are absolute pants! NEVER BUY TIME OR TINY!

all show, no go!

One reason behind this is that Intel has built in thermal protection. In most offices no one cares if his/her computer is clean or not, if the fans have dust or not, so over time fans degrade and brake. When this happens they scream to the techie around there because his/her computer hangs or is slow. With Intel CPUs this is not a problem, you just have to replace the fan, and you're done. With AMD the CPU is fried... I use AMD at home, but at the office all the computers we buy are Intel.

If AMD spent all that money advertising, They would lose the only competitive edge they currenty possess - price / performance ratio.

By spending the vast majority of their monies on R&D, AMD will hopefully be able to CRUSH intel come fall when the Athlon 64 (the home version of the opteron) is released for public consumption, and intel's puny 32 bit desktop processors are left in mass graves around the countryside. This fall AMD will prove once and for all that transistors can feel pain!

Whoops - I seem to have gotten off track here...

The point is - because AMD is losing the 32 bit war (badly) as it stands, the fate of the company practically hinges on the success of the Athlon 64, and their ability to make it outperform the best of intel's 32 bit offerings - even on 32 bit software.
