CPU Temp

Hey, I run an Athlon T-Bird 1.0Ghz not O/C'ed and it runs at 60 (no usage) to 70 (100% usage) degrees Celcius. (i think thats around 144 F) is this hot, average, or cool? should I get a better heatsink and fan?

If I take my case cover off, I run at about 55 C 0% usage

I think that is a little warm. I don't have a T-Bird anymore but my Athlon XP is always less than 50 C and I consider that too warm. The max. temp on the one I have is 90 C.

Hmmm, why would it be running so hot? Should I get a new fan/heatsink?

do you use the fan/heatsink that came with it?

One of my computers has a TBird 1,2 GHz and runs at 63º C idle, 78º full load. However the housing is a small half profile (Aopen H340H) and air flow isn't the best. Where it's placed there isn't much air flow around it, either.

Tbirds run hotter than XP (Tbred and Barton), this shouldn't be a problem if the airflow inside the case is good.

Hmm, I was thinking about a CoolerMaster HCC-001 or 002

any suggestions on thermal paste to use?

how do I apply the paste?

You can try a Thermaltake Copper heatsink with fan.. they are at www.jab-tech.com. Good for the Tbirds..

The Tbird I had ran at 165 to 170 F. So dont worry thats normal for that chip

Well, I took off my heatsink and guess what! The heat sink had 2 sheets of the paper type of thermal padding... plus they were halfway off the processor!!!

I went and bought some thermal grease and put it on... it seems to be working ok for now... just beginning Motheboard Moniter's Heat Up program to see how hot it gets at 100% usage...

well, after running the heat program for a while it seemed not to pass 66 C, so now with the new paste it operates at 56 idle to 66 100% use

good heatsink

hey hey well i just bought a new amd=ax1900 and put a valcano 7 on it it takes a good bit of room from my case. but the air flow at its lowest point is higher then most fans can even do. it has veriable speed and if that goes out the minimal is still beter then most can even do.

If you got the stock fan on the V7 i do hope its not plugged into the header of your motherboard, those fans use an awfull lotta juice and have been known to kill motherboards dead

(waits for the 'this happened to my chaintech' post from true insanity)

That is a little hot for a 1.0 Athlon. More larger fans and the best heatsync you can find. It's so hard to keep computers cool these days.

simple answer - neither, the only way to measure temps acuratly is with a digital thermometer attached directly to the cpu core.

not every monitor is accurate, but as a guide, ausu boards are known to read the temp about 5-10 c under the true cpu temp (this is due to the location of the heat sensor).
mbm usualy reads a few degrees over, so id say your true cpu temp is about 1/2 way between the two
