AMD AthlonXP 2500+ (Barton)
currently avail for $135 After burn in some people have even been able to overclock it to an ACTUAL clock speed of 2500...which would make it approx equiv to 3100+

The fastest Intel processor is the new Intel Pentium 4 3,00 GHz. It's faster than the P4 3,06 GHz because runs with quad pump 200 MHz FSB (800 MHz effective, but you need a mobo with the Canterwood chipset).
The fastest AMD is XP3200+. However its name, it's not always faster than a P4 3,00 GHz. BTW, I would choose AMD. More bang for your money! (in fact I now have a XP2000+ not o/c).

![]() That should clear stuff up for AMD... The new P4 is actually clocked at 3.0 Ghz, the AMD 3200+ is only 2.7Ghz (i believe, look at the chart...) If you take the fan off a P4, it will not overheat, it is a feature built in that slows the processor to a crawl if the fan goes out... (this does give an overall performance hit if you don't use liquid cooling) Take the fan off an Athlon... bye bye Athlon... Athlons are MUCH easier to overclock... 2 reasons: 1. built in dip switch port for overclocking 2. no overheating protection But, since Athlon has decided to go the way of deception... I don't know... tough decision, but for me: Nvidia + Athlon = Ahhhhh

The naming convention of AMD is not the core frequancy (as Intel does) but something that tries to reflect how fast is compared with a Intel P4 (more or less ). So AMD XP2600+ is like Intel P4 2,6 Ghz. XP2400+ like P4 2,4 GHz and so on.

Just stick a good HSF or other cooling on an athlon= no problems.
Athlons are less expensive...and therefore a better value. (unless you are into removing your HSF while the 'puter is running) if you compare an Athlon and a P-4 running at the same clock speed--- AMD blows the P-4 away every time. but it is like politics-- some people like AMD, some people like Intel...

By deception I mean AMD has pasted the number 3100+ on the box in big letters when the actual speed is only 2100.

I have benchmarked my dads 2.4ghz p4 with the 533mhz fsb against my 1800+ Athlon, and in many tests my 1800+ beat his. While thats not conclusive, it seems to be a common trend, the AMD processors just perform better in many functions
I've heard that P4 machines are good for media ripping/playing, while the AMD machines are better at gaming AMD also seems to be cheaper, and I've never had a problem with them, but thats my oppinion, like LP said, its like polotics, you'll get a million answers to this thread, and it will still be 50/50 AMD/Intel, so go with the cheapest equivalent
