If you really want to do a very nice job you can create multiple partitions to make sure your OS will be fine. Let's say you give your OS 6-8 GIG's (on /) and give your desktop 2 GIG's (/home) and give all the rest of your harddisk to a partition which can be your storage dir for movies or mp3z on /storage, /films or /audio...
WARNING!!!
When you install the GRUB bootloader you get a menu each time you boot at which you have to specify which OS you want to start. (you can customize this menu to start after waiting for 1 sec, but you should know...) If you don't like this and only want to try, you should not install a bootloader (skip) and create 'emergency' bootfloppys and boot from those (takes some time, but doesn't screw your boot section and windows config)
