Is it a clean install of WinXp or you just add some proggies that have a startup item? If it's the first one then your problem sounds 'big' enough to call it hardware (I think in most cases it would be just memory - RAM). And if the second case, see which program you installed - if more than one, try to install them one by one next time and restart after each install. This way you will know which program makes this for sure.
