Actually you dont have to register mIRC. It asks you to donate to register it.. but if you dont it will just pop up a browser window once every 15 days to ask for your donation. I have always used mIRC its simple and easy..
If you want to use lots of nifty scripts then go with Invision or Excursion. They are both free too
