You can't do it from a command prompt. In Me, 98/95 you have to put a floppy boot disk in and reboot. Your system will boot into a DOS mode. From there you type command format C: /q to do a quick format on the C drive.

In XP, you have to put the CD in and boot to the CD. It doesn't go into a dos mode, rather it is done from an install menu. You have to select the option that allows you to wipe everything out before you install. I think NT and 2000 are the same.

Restore/Recovery CD....Is this something that came with a computer you bought at the store from a major brand?

Typically these recovery CDs are an image of what they install on your system with all the junk on it that boots with your system. Don't do that.

If those instructions are too vague, tell me what your os is and I'll give you detailed step by step instructions.
