SuSe is a distro that people new to linux don't usually go around, you are brave You might find you have better luck with Red Hat v 9.0 (Shrike) for the simple fact that Red Hat is easier for beginners and is more likely to work with more of your hardware. Once you've been around linux more and feel comfortable you will find SuSe much more friendly. It's very possible that you do have a winmodem as faolán suggests. Winmodems are more and more common, if you can find an old modem it's more likely to work. You can look at http://www.linux.org/hardware/components.html for a listing of companies currently offering linux drivers for their hardware.
