Although I generally encourage the use of Red Hat for beginners and SuSe for advanced users, you can always find the right distro for you by going to
www.distrowatch.com (or
www.distrotwatch.ca if that's down). I do recommend avoiding Mandrake, it's a load of garbage that people expecting to buy Red Hat accidentally grab because the box is almost identical -- using Mandrake is like stamping "Newbie" on your forehead.
If you're feeling really frisky you can always get Solaris 9.0 for x86 and run UNIX instead of Linux
