Actually, AMD locks their multipliers also. Fortunately, its not overly hard to unlock them. You can have pretty good results without unlocking the multiplier.
I haven't done it yet, and I have my 1.4Ghz xp1600+ running at 1.6Ghz .... thats completely stable with a fsb of 150mhz. If I had better RAM, I could easily go higher. Be sure to choose a good motherboard and RAM and you will have great results.
Also, there is a great article on this site that shows how to unlock the new XP processor.
