My gf is looking to hook her laptop up to her cell phone for Internet access. She currently has an account with AOL.

1) They sell a modem as well as a special connecting cord to connect the modem to the cell phone. If she already has a 56k modem, can she get away with just buying the connector?

2) What kind of speeds can she expect? Yes, I know 56k sucks, but how much worse is it over a cell line?

3) How does reception effect the connection. At her appartment, she doesn't get a very good signal, how will this effect the connection.
