Thats one of the major problems.. the cable modems especially will keep track of the first device by "mac address" when you first use it. Then if you try to plug in a router it freaks out and wont let you validate for internet access.
The other way around this is to unplug the power of your cable modem and let it reset for 15 seconds.. then plug it back in. Whe you plug in the router after that it shoudl work fine.
