It could be a few things...you've already gone through some..you rebooted..did nothing.
you checked the plug from speakers to computer..I hope. (I have a problem with mine & that is the fix..I play an MP3 & wiggle the plug at the computer side till it comes back..only happens when I move a cable in the back..otherwise all is good)...back to you...did you happen to install 'Total Recorder'..this will change all the sounds in your system by using their kernel..and that sucks.
Also...did you install any program around the time this started..??
Have you tried doing a System Restore..??
Did you go into Control Panel/Sound Devices & check that you have the right device in the window...if not..use the dropdown to set it.
