It shouldnt damage either. If the 400 chip is unlcked, and the mobo bios allows, simply set the apprpriate mutipliers and frequency. If the bios reads the cpu as 400 bus, and plugs in the lower multiplier, it wont work if chip is locked, but shouldnt hurt anything. Many boards state they only support 333 bus, but "may" support 400 as well; the 333 was released prior to the 400's. But also many chipsets did not support 400 fsb anyway, so its a gamble. BTW 333 fsb chps are available used, and I may have a few left over. The mobo I use (a7n8X del Asus) allows me to basically set any fsb and multiplier I want. Obviosly if I clock it wrong, the bios neds to be cleared, AND wrong settings CAN overheat cpu, so be mindful of temps. I'd be happy to trade you a 333 chip for your 400 if that will help you. A bios reflash MAY alow your mobo to run 400 fsb, but if you do, be sure to run memory in synch.
Just be sure th cpu chip is not toasted and shorted internaly, as that CAN damage the board. I've never heard of a 333 bus mobo hurting a 400 cpu' although that is no guarantee, it SHOULD be safe to test.
