I'm no expert in DSL lines, but from my experience if the DSL modem can't get in sync, those parameters won't do anything (even if you have the wrong ones). Once the modem gets in sync with the DSL, then with the correct parameters and the correct authentication, you'll get the connection with your ISP.

Nevertheless in order for AOL "technical support" (ugh!) to help you' it's much better if you make things easy for them: use their hardware and whatever software they want installed (even if it's obviously not necessary, but you know how this things work). Since you have Norton Ghost, you know that you can let your computer as if nothing happened after they get it working.

When working with Norton Ghost, take some steps to insure that the image you're doing can be successfully restored: boot with the Ghost CD-ROM and check the integrity of the image, so you know you'll be able to restore it if needed. Also it's a good idea to do a backup using a different method: burn your documents to a DVD or something like this. I wouldn't want to have all my valuable data in a single place; if it fails, everything would be lost.
