What's happening is that the DSL modem can't syncrhonize, so no connection is possible. It's not a problem of DNS or username or anything. If the DSL modem can't get in sync, no data can be transmited, not even authentication.
You did the right thing using the AOL modem, because if you can't get it to work, then the problem is in the line itself and AOL has to help you to get it working. Once it's working with the AOL modem, plug the DSL router you have. In order to avoid messing your systems, it's recomended to do a Ghost image or if you don't have Norton Ghost, use System Restore to get you system to the state it was before using the AOL modem.
