Yup usually this is the way it's done. The hard part is if you want to keep your existing OS installation (read Windows, I think Linux is not that sensitive to such changes). You would probably have to reboot in Safe mode, uninstall any old mobo/chipset drivers, shutdown, install new mobo and then pray. Seriously I'm not sure if it would work. Win is a weird breed of IT animal. Sometimes the trick may work, but most of the times my forecast is a blue screen before even it gets into Desktop.
