Watch Out for WinME
This post is really, really far behind the rest, but I just wanted to include a side-note... The original problem described by Anon just happened to me - except I didn't make any hardware upgrades/moves/additions, etc.... I just booted. Like normal. And DOS couldn't detect the disk.
Just like Anon, the PC that crashed was running ME. Now, I've always been of the opinion is that ME is really, REALLY unstable as it is, but after reading this I'm starting to think that ME may have played a pivotal role in the malfunction of my drive (altho I've never really trusted Scandisk either, you know?) Granted, my drive was probably burnt out on me as it was... but still.
Either way, I'm stoked I found this forum while searching for the solution. Hopefully, using all of your excellent suggestions, I too will be able to recover most of my stuff off my poor, taxed drive.
Oh, and if you or any loved ones still has ME on their box, get-it-off get-it-off get-it-off! Anything - even XP - is better than ME. Anything.
