I agree with technobeast it sound like a hardware/driver problem If the machine doesn’t have a sound card then it is a driver for the motherboard and that will give errors in the device manager,If it does have a soundcard than it the sound card driver--Note if it does
have a sound card you might remove and replace it to reseat it I seen this to solve problems. Good Luck
