the reason is one of ballance, when you put the heatsink on, it only contacts with the core of the chip, although not required for the chip to run, they are desired to help keep the heatsink flush and level on the core for the best heat transfer. they also help to prevent damage (most offten noticable as chips on the edges and corners of the core itself).

my advice.. leave well alone.
