ok heres a list off the top of my head for the most widely available space combat sims:

X-Wing Alliance
Elite II: Frontier
Tachyon
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter
Freelancer
StarLancer
Freespace 2
Homeworld
Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos
X

My favourite is Freespace because its a no nonsence shooter with amazing effects. Though i think it doesnt support many new graphics cards and i found myself playing 2 missions in 800x600 software mode.. which isnt pretty. Eventually uninstalled it for lack of eye candy, which is where the game excells.
