I know EXACTLY what you mean about kids and Cds.... I live that nightmare daily...LOL...
The best way to make backup copies of your cds is by using ALCOHOL 120%....It will make working backups of just about any cd (even the new fileprotections--but with some of them you need to use the copied discs in conjunction with Alcohol..but they do work).

It will also make working backups of your PS2 games..but as you have learned you need to modify how you use the discs..(It used to be that you could just put a spring in a slot of the open door..use it to depress a little button while the door is open...start your ps2 with a working game disc, then once it is going..switch the cds for your copied game..but I am not sure what you do nowdays)
